Be human

Empathy is key to authentic branding

I recently spoke at a LinkedIn Live event about the role of empathy in branding. It made me realize that empathy is crucial to branding—at least the way I practice it.

What is Empathy in Branding?

Empathy is about understanding your customers and actively trying to help them. But you have to align your actions with what you say you stand for. Otherwise, you're just being a jerk.

The Secret to Branding

People don’t care about your brand, they care about themselves. And that’s okay. Be the type of brand (and person) who reminds your audience, clients, and customers of what they're capable of. Start by aligning your brand with a mission, a vision, a philosophy, or something else bigger than your ego.

The Core Objective of Your Brand

Your brand needs to have the simple, core objective of helping other people. Answer the question: "What (and who) am I in service of? How can I help?" Communicate that, everywhere, all the time.

Be Human

Mean what you say. It's pretty simple, and yet surprisingly rare. Rare is special. It gets noticed. Rare is remembered.

Be rare.
